Nike's Total 90 Laser III football boots are said to be behind the recent string of goals from on-form Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and can also be seen on the fiery feet of Liverpool goal-machine Fernando Torres.
At RM749 this accuracy-enhancing footwear doesn't come cheap but is packed with the latest tech-specs and is considerably lighter than its preceding model, the Laser II.
The new and improved Swerve Fins allow the player to apply varying degrees of spin on the ball while at the same time let the feet breathe. Along with the trademark Shot Shield there is now memory foam that moulds around the bridge of the foot and creates a flat surface to balance the distribution of pressure while shooting.
Described by one of it's designers as the "crazy green" shoe, additional versions in alternative colours and materials will be available towards the end of the year if you don't want to go for the extra-terrestrial look this season.
Along with KL's most out-of-shape Press personnel we went to the FAM stadium to try out the new Nike model and undergo a simple but exhausting training session.
"Just Do It... and here's how" were the words from Malaysia National Coach, K Rajagobal as he backed the product during his brief address to us. It was then time for us to go head-to-head with a team of upcoming local grassroots players who showed real promise on the playing field.
Our training has not ended with the embarrassment we suffered in our short run-around and Nike has presented us with a means to learn from our mistakes back home. Each pair of boots comes with an activation code for the Nike Football+ online training program, which is also available as an iPod app.
