Calling all DJ hopefuls. If you ever harboured any hopes of being a good DJ, here's your chance to pick up some tips from some of the best in the industry.
Of late, Kuala Lumpur seems to be the place to be. Our party scene seems to be getting more attention with various events held almost every weekend, that see celebrated DJs and artistes making their way to our shores. Acts like Basement Jaxx, 2manydjs, Axwell, The Bloody Beetroots and superstar Ne-yo have performed to a sell out audiences.
This coming weekend, January 23 will see yet another music event with Global Sound Masters running the second leg of their music conference. Titled 'The Creation', this event shares the same concept as the initial roll out, 'The Beginning' held on November 21.
The new session is specially catered to those who are enthusiastic in delving into the DJ-ing world. Participants at the conference will get tips and pointers from successful DJs/producers on how to excel in the industry.
DJs Richard Durand from Netherlands and Sean Tyas from USA will be amongst those who will be there. Recently, we got a chance to have a brief Q&A session with Durand:
Q: How was it like co-hosting the BBC radio 1 with one of UK's most popular radio DJ Judge Jules?
A: It was really nice to have been offered the chance, partly due to the prestige of BBC Radio 1. But mainly, it was because Jules is someone that is great to work with - he's a real nice guy to be around!
Q: You seem to be scaling the charts: From 91th position to 67 to 49 in the 'DJ Magazine Top 100' list. What do you think contributes to this?
A: Hopefully that people like me? Haha... just kidding! It helps greatly to have a complete team working with me; good bookings and management and of course Black Hole Recordings is a first class music label. When the team works like this then I can release my music in the best way possible and travel around the world to perform at the best shows.
Q: Would you say that having great PR is important to make sure your music is heard?
A: Yes, but I also believe that the best PR is what people think of you. It's impossible to brand yourself if "they" don't like you!
Q: Where is your largest fan base located?
A: At the moment I'd say probably the UK, Poland and the Netherlands. But this changes every month!
Q: You've performed in various countries such as the UK, Australia, Russia and a host of other countries around the world. Do you adapt your sets to cater to the local audience?
A: My sound depends mainly on the event I perform at. Some parties are more trance like Trance Energy and some prefer more house like Sensation White. I always play my own sound... sometimes a bit more trance and sometimes a bit more house.
Q: What inspires you?
A: There are so many factors that give me inspiration for my music. It can be anything from listening to other people's music, a visit to the movies, or simply travelling on tour to different countries.
Q: Any future plans to have more collaboration with other artistes?
A: I've just finished a remix for The Crystal Method and I'm now working on a new Tiesto remix. Keep an eye on my website for more news and previews of these soon.
'The Creation' will be an event worth attending. A workshop and a massive appreciation party all rolled in one. Interested individuals can get your tickets to this event, which are priced at RM39 (early birds) and RM59 (door-sale). A special VIP package for party high-rollers is also available for purchase.
