SOME say sequins are going to be "in" this year. Booties will take a backseat and kicking off the fashion trend in 2010 are biker boots. And, in the beauty department, blue and green nail polish are set to be the coolest colours.
While sequins are always smashing, caution must be applied when wearing these sensational sparklers. Too much of it can make you appear gaudy, not glamorous. Worse still, you might run the risk of looking like a disco ball.
Even though sequins originated from the 70s and is very much the preferred detailing (for its over-the-top glittering effect) of performing drag queens, I personally feel it's a wardrobe classic.
Take for instance, a sequinned tank top. You can wear it to "dress up" a pair of jeans or even a plain, sombre-coloured skirt or trousers.
Why, American designer Isaac Mizrahi once had a model wear a voluminous, black ball skirt matched with a white sequinned singlet. The result? Utterly modern and effortlessly glamorous. That look which he created in the early 90s can still look fresh and fabulous today.
Sequins may be stunning but remember that if you decide to don something shimmering, let that very ONE thing shine and sparkle. Don't overdo it by wearing sequins head-to-toe.
If you're too shy to wear sequins on you, why not carry something encrusted with sequins such as a clutch or a bag. And, nowadays, shoes too come swathed in sequins.
As for the next predicted trend - the biker boots - this one's a tad tricky. Not for the dainty or feminine, this edgy soles are reserved for the rugged or the fashion conscious (now that they're in fashion!).
While the original biker boots are usually flat and boring, the updated version come with a slight heel for added style. The silver chain that entwines each boot is there as it is the hallmark of the biker boot.
Often seen on style-setters such as Mary Kate-Olsen and Nicole Richie (they've been wearing them for the past few years), such shoes look good mostly with jeans and ripped, denim hotpants.
If you're bold and daring enough, why not give a boho-glam-rock edge to your flair skirt and top ensemble or sundress by pairing them with biker boots? Don't forget the pre-requisite slouchy tote and a straw fedora to complete this look, favoured by Kate Moss.
Add an extra dose of style by painting your nails blue or red. Seen on the nails of Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham last Christmas eve to match her hubby David's blue necktie, blue nail polish is a modern and fresh alternative to the conventional reds and pinks.
Green nail colour is also freshly unexpected. It was first introduced by Chanel for its recent spring 2010 show. Christened Jade by the French brand, the hue is hot, hot, hot!
That's the thing about dressing in this new year. It's not only about being fashionable but also fearless. Be brave. Be creative. Wear your sequins and walk tall in those biker boots.
